How to get core wood in Valheim (and what it's for)

Core wood comes from pine trees in the Black Forest. How much each tree drops, the axe you need, and every recipe and build piece that uses it.

Corewood (the game spells it as one word) comes from pine trees in the Black Forest. Chop one down, split the log, and you get core wood. Any axe works.

Where to find pine trees

Pines grow in the Black Forest next to fir trees. Firs only drop regular Wood, so check which tree you’re cutting.

Felling a pine can also drop resin, feathers and pine cones: half the time it rolls once or twice on that table. You can plant pine cones with a Cultivator in the Meadows, Black Forest or Plains, and a sapling takes 50 to 83 minutes to grow.

Which axe you need

Pines have no minimum tool tier, so the Stone Axe cuts them. A Bronze Axe is just faster.

Birch and oak, which drop Finewood, need a tier 2 axe. That’s the wood that needs bronze, not core wood.

How much core wood you get

A felled pine leaves a log that splits into two halves. Each half drops 15 pieces, and each piece is an even roll between core wood and regular wood. That’s 30 pieces of wood per tree, about 15 of them core wood.

Core wood weighs 2, stacks to 50 and can go through portals.

Log beams and poles are why most players farm core wood. In the game data they’re made of the core wood building material, not plain wood, so they carry weight differently. The building materials table lists every piece by material.
