Valheim Forge of Potential: location, idols and the risk
The Forge of Potential takes max-quality gear one level higher for an idol, and an attempt can fail. Where it spawns and where each idol drops.

There’s one Forge per world, somewhere in the Mountain, and it works on weapons, tools and armour that can’t be upgraded any further at their own station. No recipe or trader makes idols, so most of this guide is about where they drop.
The quick answer
| What | Answer |
|---|---|
| Biome | Mountain |
| Spots per world | Up to 10; the first one a player comes near becomes the Forge |
| Distance | At least 500 m from the world centre, 400 m between spots |
| Cost per attempt | 1 idol (battle or protection, tier set by the item) |
| Risk | An attempt can fail, and a failure can destroy the item |
Where to find the Forge of Potential
The game places up to 10 candidate spots in Mountain biomes, away from their edges. They work like Haldor’s camp: the first spot any player comes near becomes the world’s Forge of Potential, and the others disappear. Its map icon shows up once you’re close.
Searching every mountain is slow. Open the seed map with your world’s seed, and it marks every candidate spot and selects the one nearest to spawn. Head to that one first: unless someone on your world has already been near another spot, it becomes the Forge. You can also drop your .fwl world file on the map to set the seed.
A runestone at the site tells the story of Ingrid and Torgunn, who both tried their luck here. Ingrid got a great boon. Torgunn’s blade shattered on the altar.
The Forge has no build recipe and isn’t a building piece, so you can’t make your own, deconstruct it or carry it home. Build a portal nearby.
How refining works
Upgrade an item at its normal station until it reaches its maximum quality. Past that, each level is an attempt at the Forge that costs one idol, and it can fail. A failure can destroy the item, as the runestone’s story warns, so only refine what you can afford to lose.
Which idol you need
Each recipe names one idol. Weapons and tools take a battle idol; armour, capes and shields take a protection idol. There are eight tiers of each, from wooden to bloodgold, and 227 items use one.
The tier usually follows the item’s material, but not always. A few examples:
Each item’s page lists its idol under the upgrade costs.
Where idols drop
No recipe or trader makes idols. They come from loot containers, and each tier has its own biome. The odds below are per roll (a range where containers differ); a chest rolls its loot table 2 to 7 times depending on the chest.
| Tier | Best places to look | Battle idol | Protection idol |
|---|---|---|---|
| Wooden | Meadows chests: beached ships; wooden houses, farms and villages | 1.8% / 0.8% | 0.9% / 1.6% |
| Bronze | Black Forest and Swamp chests: ruins, stone towers, stone houses, Troll Caves, swamp huts | 0.8–1.1% | 1.6–2.3% |
| Iron | Swamp chests: swamp ruins, graves, Sunken Crypts | 0.5% | 0.9–1.1% |
| Silver | Mountain chests: Frost Caves, Howling Cavern | 1.2% | 2.3% |
| Black metal | Plains chests: Sealed Tower, Fuling villages and huts, stone towers | 1.3–1.4% | 2.5–2.7% |
| Black marble | Mistlands Dvergr treasure chests in ruined guard towers and rock spires | 2.8% | 5.6% |
| Flametal | Deep North chests in huts and lumber camps; barrels in northern villages and the Winding Tunnels | 0.9–2.8% | 1.9–2.2% |
| Bloodgold | Deep North: Ancient Chests in Mörkhalla, Jotun’s chests, northern village chests and wrecks | 0.1–0.2% | 0.2–0.4% |
Most tiers also turn up at lower odds (0.1 to 0.6%) in earlier biomes: bronze idols in the Meadows, iron idols in the Black Forest, silver idols in the Swamp, black marble idols in a Plains trash pile and flametal idols in Mistlands Dvergr tower chests. Black marble and flametal idols also come from Ashlands ancient pots, Putrid Holes and charred chests.
Idols weigh 0.5, stack to 20 and can go through portals.

FAQ
Where is the Forge of Potential in Valheim?
In the Mountains. Each world has up to 10 possible spots, at least 500 m from the world centre and 400 m from each other. The first one a player comes near becomes the Forge and the others disappear.
Can refining at the Forge of Potential fail?
Yes, and a failure can destroy the item: the runestone at the site tells of a blade that shattered on the altar. Only refine what you can afford to lose.
Where do you get battle idols and protection idols?
Only from chests, barrels, pots and piles out in the world. No recipe or trader makes them. Each tier comes from its own biome, from Meadows chests for wooden idols to Deep North chests for bloodgold idols.
Which idol does an item need?
The one in its recipe. Weapons and tools take a battle idol, armour, capes and shields a protection idol, and the tier doesn't always match the metal: the bronze axe takes an iron battle idol.
Can you move the Forge of Potential to your base?
No. It has no build recipe and isn't a building piece, so you can't make one, deconstruct it or carry it home. Put a portal near it instead.
